Subject: Invitation To Sikh Community’s Khalistan Referendum Voting Event
Date: October 31, 2021 - 9:00 a.m. to 18:00
Place: Queen Elizabeth II Center,
Broad Sanctuary, London, UK
Dear Honourable Member Parliament:
My Name is . I am a member of the British Sikh community and your constituent.
I am writing to invite you to attend the opening ceremony of Khalistan Referendum Voting scheduled to be held on October 31, 2021 at Queen Elizabeth II Center, London. Khalistan Referendum is a community initiative which seeks to determine the will of the Sikh people on the question of right to self-determination and establishment of a sovereign country – Khalistan - in the region of Indian Punjab.
31st October is an important date in the Sikh history and collective memory as thousands of British Sikhs and their family members are survivors and witnesses of the Genocide which was planned on that day in 1984.
Sikh people’s journey from Genocide to Referendum is a story of remarkable perseverance and their belief in freedom, equality and democratic values in the face of continuous Indian state violence.
Sikh people’s demand for right to self-determination is well grounded in the Article 1 of UN Charter and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which provide that “all peoples have right to self-determination”. Under the UNESCO guidelines, indigenous people of Indian region of Punjab of whom Sikhs are the largest religious community, are “peoples” and thus qualify for right to self-determination. Under Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) voting on a political question such as right to self-determination is the basic right of all peoples. Thus, not only Sikhs right to self-determination is guaranteed under international law but Sikh peoples’ initiative of seeking to realize their right through the mechanism of Referendum is also in complete conformity with international law and democratic principles.
Since 1947, Republic of India has been persecuting Sikhs by usurping their religious identity, subjecting them to Hindu personal and family laws on one hand and to the repetitive genocides on the other hand, extreme economic exploitation leading to suicide by the Punjab farmers, and most recently by enacting anti-farmer laws and using violence to crush the farmers’ protest.
On October 31, 2021 , I along with my family and friends will be going to QEII Center to vote in Khalistan Referendum and as your constituent I would like you to make time to visit the QEII Center to support and appreciate Sikh community’ initiative of using the modus operandi of Referendum to determine the will of the people on the question of secession of Punjab from India.
Yours sincerely,
British Sikhs
